For our purposes this will be, admittedly, a “lite” version of inductive study.
An “inductive” approach typically has 3 main phases:
- Notice everything there is to notice about the psalm. What words or phrases repeat? Is there any parallelism? What questions come to mind as you read it? What makes sense/what doesn’t make sense?
- Take some time to figure out (or look up) answers to the questions you asked during the observation phase. This is the time to try to “make sense” of what the psalmist is saying.
- Now is the time to make personal/life application (always keeping in mind that it’s never first and foremost about us; but nevertheless, there might be an action step, a step of obedience that God leads you to.
