Friday (2/21)

Read Romans 6: 19-23

In these verses we come on a new word: SANCTIFICATION. “Sanctification is a theological  term that refers to the process of being made holy, set apart for God’s purposes, and  conformed to the image of Christ… The means of sanctification include the Word of God, prayer, the sacraments, and the fellowship of believers…. The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in sanctification, as He indwells believers and empowers them to live holy lives…. (Bible Hub).

A few weeks back Andrew asked us to recite together, at the end of the sermon, a prayer of confession of sin. Is there any area of sin that is plaguing you right now?

How have you seen the Holy Spirit change you since becoming a part of God’s family?

Spend time thanking God for His gift of righteousness leading to sanctification/holiness.  Confess sin and thank Him for freeing you from slavery to sin and death.

Thursday (2/20)

Read Romans 6:15-18

These verses ask us “what now?” One way or another we are slaves either to sin or slaves to  God and His righteousness. We all have a master. We are not in control of ourselves. We are  all born slaves to sin. And if/when we see the rescue story of Jesus as true and for us by the  gift of faith, we are then slaves to righteousness.

In your journal, write out your own story related to verses 17 and 18 quoted below:

  • Thank God that although you used to be a slave to sin (all a gift):
  • You obeyed from the heart (the wonder of the gospel story became real to you – a gift):
  • Having been set free from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness (Jesus set us free from  sin and we take on the gift of His holiness and righteousness)

If parts of this don’t yet fit your story, ask God for Him to open the eyes of your heart to the transforming truth of the gospel.

Wednesday (2/19)

Read Romans 6: 8-14

How did Jesus get victory over death?

What does this mean for you and I?

What does it look like to ‘count myself dead to sin’?

Then how do I ‘count myself alive to God’?

Which parts of your body are the most prone to be offered as instruments of sin?

How, in practical ways, can you offer them to God to be used for righteousness?

Spend some time right now sitting with the Holy Spirit and just being honest about where you need help?

Tuesday (2/18)

Read Romans 6:1-7

Remember to pray and ask the Lord for wisdom.

Again, Paul poses the question of whether or not we should seek to sin more because it brings more grace. And again he says, “NO”!

How exactly have we ‘died to sin?’ Explain this idea in your journal.

What does it mean that we are united with Christ in His death?

How does this, in practical, everyday ways, enable us to live a new life?

How and why did we used to be slaves to sin?

How does this ‘dying’ free us from the slavery to sin?

Monday (2/17)

Read Romans 6 (remember to pray!)

Do the Know, Be, Do version of study:

KNOW (What does the text say about God?)

BE (What does the text say about us?)

DO (What is the text calling me/us to do?)

Write out the whole verse that you want to stick with you throughout the day today in your journal.

Sunday (2/16)

Spent some time just relaxing with the Lord.

Spend some time thanking the Father for being “your God” and claiming you as His own.

Ask also who you could encourage today to press on in their faith?

Saturday (2/15)

Read Romans 5:18-21

List out:

  1. Consequences thru Adam
  2. Consequences thru Jesus

How does the obedience of Jesus encourage you to obey right now?

I suppose it follows that if Jesus demonstrated obedience to us, then He could have chosen disobedience? How do you feel about this?

Today, if you’ve allowed Jesus to pay the penalty for your sins, God calls you ‘righteous’. How can you see evidence of His righteousness in you?
