1 Peter is written to God’s chosen, exiles in churches scattered across modern-day Turkey (square mileage similar to the state of California). They’re God's chosen family in Christ, but they live as exiles precisely because 1) they follow Jesus before any other authority and 2) their home and hope are not of this world. Peter writes compellingly of how these church communities are humbled through suffering, yet somehow filled with the best kind of living hope.
You may not have thought of yourself as an exile before, but consider how truly following the way of Jesus puts us at odds with the ways of the world. The letter of 1 Peter anchors oddballs like us in the gospel story of Jesus where we come to know a new covenant family community, faithfully resist evil, and find hope in suffering. Even if following Jesus pushes us further to the margins, we’re yet called to be people who faithfully embody the virtues of humility and hope. What might that look like for us in this season, church?
